What Are Wisdom Teeth — And Why Do They Matter?

The “wisdom teeth” are the third molars, typically the last permanent adult teeth to emerge — usually in your late teens or early twenties.

Historically, they served a purpose: our ancestors needed extra chewing power for coarse, tough foods. But modern diets and often limited jaw space mean wisdom teeth can cause problems more often than they help.

Some reasons you or your dentist might not recommend keeping them:

  • Lack of space can lead to crowding or shifting of other teeth.
  • They may become impacted — stuck beneath the gum or bone — and grow at angles that push on nearby teeth.
  • Partial eruption can make cleaning difficult, increasing risk of decay, gum inflammation, or infection.

Still, in some cases — if the wisdom teeth erupt fully, are aligned properly, and can be cleaned easily — there may be no need for extraction.

When & Why Removal May Be Recommended

At Amy Durisin Dental, we evaluate each case individually. We may recommend wisdom teeth removal when:

  • They are causing wisdom teeth pain, swelling, or swollen gums behind wisdom teeth.
  • They are impacted, angled, or partially erupted, causing risk to neighboring teeth.
  • They’re difficult to clean, increasing risk of decay or gum disease.
  • They interfere with planned orthodontic or restorative treatments.
  • You want to prevent future complications even if you’re not currently having pain.

Our goal isn’t just extraction — it’s to preserve your long-term oral and systemic wellness, mood, and comfort.

The Removal Procedure & What to Expect

Procedure: Wisdom teeth removal — also known as wisdom tooth extraction — is a common, safe surgical procedure.

  • We start with a comprehensive exam and imaging to evaluate the position of your wisdom teeth relative to jawbone and nearby structures.

The dentist may remove the tooth under local anesthesia (or sedation if needed), gently extract the tooth — sometimes removing bone or dividing the tooth if necessary — and then close the site for healing.

Recovery
  • Most uncomplicated extractions take 15–45 minutes per tooth; full healing usually takes about 1–2 weeks.
  • Common temporary side effects: swelling, soreness, mild bleeding — all normal.
  • Wisdom teeth aftercare instructions are provided to support comfortable recovery and prevent complications.

After Removal — Healing & What to Eat

What you eat matters. Early nutrition and care help your wisdom teeth recovery time and reduce discomfort. We recommend:

  • Soft and nourishing foods: yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, oatmeal, broth-based soups, applesauce, scrambled eggs, etc. — especially in the first few days.
  • Avoid hot, crunchy, chewy, or hard foods that might irritate the healing site.

Combined with rest, gentle oral hygiene (with guidance), and any recommended pain or anti-inflammatory care, this helps speed up healing and reduce discomfort.
